From the piano/bass riff at the beginning of "Jay Hawk Talk" to the Parker -esque kickoff of "Beepdurple," the band holds a steady, driving groove. Both of those instrumentals, plus "Dance of the Night Child," were written by Jones and stand comfortably beside the other selections on this album.

Aug 02,  · "Jay Hawk Talk," recorded on 5/8/65 for the Prestige label, features Jimmy Heath on tenor sax, Barry Harris on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roger Humphries on drums. The disc is split evenly between Jones originals (the title track, "Dance of the Night Child," and "Beepdurple /5(6).

This cracklin' tight group features Jones in the company of Jimmy Heath on tenor, Barry Harris on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roger Humphries on drums – and the tracks include "Beepdurple", "Jay Hawk Talk", and "Dance Of The Night Child". A great mix .

Apr 25,  · It’s not that simple, though. When I asked him for examples of the album’s repertoire, Hill mentioned a couple of tunes well off the beaten path: Horace Silver’s “Moon Rays” and a bop-calypso workout called “Beepdurple,” by the Kansas City trumpeter Carmel Jones. He also stressed that the album would have a recognizable Blacktet.

Dec 05,  · Beepdurple. T itle track Jay Hawk Talk (penned by Jones, who hailed from Kansas, the Jayhawk State) is a stunner; an infectious vamp on par with such classics as Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder (featuring, incidentally, Barry Harris) or Herbie Hancocks Watermelon Man. Jones’ hard swinging, staccato lines set the tone and Barry Harris showcases.
